RSSIMHRN, August 9

After reading the NYT's review of the B.B. King/Al Green show at Madison Square, which culminated in a description of Rev. Green's take on "Amazing Grace," the Blind Boys of Alabama are gracing my inner soundtrack this morning. Their version of the hymn -- with the traditional lyrics layered over the chord progression to "House of the Rising Sun" -- has long been an iPod staple for me, particularly after we were lucky enough to hear them perform the song live when opening for Peter Gabriel a few years back.

BB and Al Green are a "funny" mix. Al was a "pop" star in the 70s, slid into drugs, found religion, became an ordained minister, and is now doing "oldies" shows. BB never gets old, he has never stopped touring and recording. Their styles and tastes are quite different, I would have been curious to hear how they worked together.

Well, they're actually playing the MN State Fair together in a couple of weeks, so I'll be curious to see how the local reviews look the next morning.
